Google Feed Burner is a great way to let your readers stay updated with your latest posts. If you are not using Google Feed Burner then you should start using it on your blog if you want to grow your blog. Google keeps on changing it’s search algorithms with time. But, allowing your users to subscribe to your feeds ensures that you have interested readers and they will continue to visit your blog. This way you don’t need to worry about Google algorithms update.
Recent days, when I was designing and modifying custom theme for my blog, I got stuck with many issues. The reason behind selecting a custom theme was to provide my reader a great user experience. I tried to cover everything for blog. There is no lack of contents on the internet. Visitors have complete freedom to choose between any blog available. So, what makes him to attach to your blog? A perfect look of your blog plays a very important role in this.
Well, I am using Genesis Framework for my theme. When I installed a plugin called Genesis eNews Extended to provide an option to my readers to subscribe to my latest posts and stay updated, it resulted in error. Later I solved the issue and decided to write an article keeping in mind that other peoples could also face this.
After installing Genesis eNews Extended plugin, when I tested it myself, I got an error from RSS Feed Burner saying, “The Feed does not have Subscriptions by Email Enabled”. I was not able to subscribe to feeds. Well, I solved out the problem later and studied the case in more depth and here I will try to cover all possible issues related to “Subscribing to Feeds” stuff.
Understanding the Error “The Feed does not have Subscriptions by Email Enabled”:-
Well, the error “The Feed does not have Subscriptions by Email Enabled” occurs when readers want to subscribe for the latest posts. In order to do this, he fills up his e-mail address and name [if required]. Subscribing to the blog, he begins to receive e-mails from the particular blog whenever a new post is made. But, if the blog has some issue with subscribing, each time one wants to subscribe, get the following error message.
Possible Reasons behind the error “The Feed does not have Subscriptions by Email Enabled”:-
There may be more than one possible issue behind the issue. Some of the reasons are as:-
- E-mail Subscriptions are not enabled on Google Feed Burner account.
- You have inserted wrong address on your blog linking to Google Feed Burner. Might be you have not even inserted any feed URL.
- User is not providing correct e-mail ID.
- Genesis Framework, Genesis eNews Extended Plugin Issue.
How to Solve the Error “The Feed does not have Subscriptions by Email Enabled”:-
As stated above, these might be possible reasons behind the error. So, we need to look through all the issues individually. So let’s begins with:-
1. E-Mail Subscriptions not enabled
The following reason is concerned with your Google Feed Burner account. By default, when you sign up for Google Feed Burner, they do not enable E-Mail Subscriptions by default. So, most of us are not aware of this issue. If you want your readers to subscribe to your blog, you first need to enable E-mail subscriptions by going to your Google Feed Burner account. You need to sign-in with the same e-mail ID which you use for your feed burner account. Follow the easy steps to solve out the problem.
- Go to Google Feed Burner account
- Click on the Publicize Button
- Now from left sidebar, choose E-Mail Subscriptions
- Open it and click on activate.
You don’t need to copy-paste any code given there. Just ignore that. Done. You have successfully activated your feeds by e-mail subscriptions.
2. Inserting correct URL of Feed Burner on Blog
Next thing you want to do is to put the correct URL of your Google Feed Burner account on your blog. Putting wrong URL will not redirect subscriber to the right place. So follow the steps:
i. Click on Edit Feed Details
ii. Here you got three options.
a) Feed Title – Name your Blog Feed you want
b) Original Feed – This is your original feed URL
c) Feed Address – This is our Google Feed Burner ID.
iii. Copy only the username and paste it to your blog. For ex., feed ID of this blog is http://feeds.feedburner.com/WebLogCentral. Copy “WebLogCentral” and paste it to blog. Remember, not any other thing should be pasted. Otherwise things will not work and it will result in error again.
Genesis Framework – Genesis eNews Extended plugin case:-
Suppose you have installed Genesis framework on your blog. To make it easier for readers to subscribe to your feeds, you can install a plugin called Genesis eNews Extended. This will work on Genesis Frameworks only. Go to your WordPress dashboard, install and activate the required plugin.
- Go to Appearance> Widgets.
- Insert the eNews Extended Widget in sidebar or anywhere you want.
- Under the Google Feed Burner ID section, put your feed burner username. Like my feedburner ID username is “WebLogCentral”. Insert it without quotes.
Click OK. Reload the webpage and you are not done!
Genesis eNews Extended Exceptional Case:-
User who installed Genesis eNews Extended plugin will also need to install MailPoet Subscription Form plugin. Just install it you need to do nothing more. eNews Extended plugin requires this plugin to collect the e-mails.
